Dallas Mavericks Basketball

The Dallas Mavericks entered the NBA as an expansion team in 1980. While initially experiencing all the normal woes of a new franchise, over the years the Mavericks have come to play some respectable basketball. That elusive NBA Championship though, has yet to arrive in Dallas but in the past few seasons it beckons ever more strongly.

In 2006 under the leadership of head coach Avery Johnson, the Dallas Mavericks had their best season ever, winning 60 games,finishing in second place in the Southwest, and earning Johnson NBA Coach of the Year. The most bitter pill to swallow was that the Mavericks finished behind their in state rivals the San Antonio Spurs. As the Mavericks entered the NBA Playoffs, fans in the American Airlines Arena were licking their chops, just hoping to get a chance at the Spurs. They got their wish, making quick work of the Memphis Grizzlies and setting what came to be known as the Lone Star State Showdown. It took seven games and last minute heroics, but Dallas eventually knocked off the reigning NBA Champions. Unfortunately, in the NBA Finals the mavericks fell victim to the Miami Heat.

Now, the American Airlines Center is packed every night as the Dallas Mavericks line up to chase that NBA Championship. With Johnson at the helm, and stars like Dirk Nowitzki on the court, the Mavericks are a force to be reckoned with in the Southwest. What makes it all the more interesting is the fierce rivalry that exists between the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Houston Rockets. All play in Texas, and all compete in the Southwest Division. That makes for some exciting times in the American Airlines Center when the Spurs or the Rockets show up.
